Before you toss your clothes into the washer, remove pins or buckles, zip zippers, close snaps and hooks, and secure Velcro to prevent snags and abrasions. But don't button buttons—this can stress the buttons themselves and buttonholes. 

Sort clothes according to fabric type and color shade. Group dark, medium, and light colors separately. Always wash according to the garments care label instructions.
